After the death of their mother, adult children Benny and Byron return home to discover that she’s left two unusual inheritances. First is a traditional Caribbean black cake, which she instructs them to eat when the time is right. The second is a voice recording, where Benny and Byron learn that Eleanor Bennett had secrets that will change how they think of their mother forever.

Eleanor tells the story of a young swimmer from the Caribbean who escapes an unwanted marriage under suspicion of murder. As the swimmer travels to the United Kingdom and then to the United States, the secrets Eleanor has held all these years unfold in front of Benny and Byron. A long-lost child, the death of her first husband, and who Eleanor Bennett really is.
